The Zebrafish

The zebrafishes scientific name is Danio Rerio. It's a amall tropical fresh-water fish that lives in the rivers of northern India, northern Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan in south Asia. It measures about 4-5 centimeters. It breeds very quickly and daily. It's a vertebrate like us, so it can give us clues about human biology, that invertebrates may not. Biologists study this organism to help with embryonic development. This is because the egg is invisible so you can see the fish inside the egg. If defects in the development in the fish egg is happening you can tell very easily. They hatch so quickly that in two days it is hatched. These small little fish can absorb small molecules from the aquarium water.

Unlike mammals, though, zebrafish develop from a fertilised egg. This makes it possible to study embryo's in its natural environment. When these fish are born, for the very first days in their lives they are transparent to, just like their eggs. This makes it easier for researchers observethe formation of the internal organs in the fish. The embryonic development of this fish is AMAZING! It goes by very quickly and rapidly. In the first 24 hours of fertilisation all of the major organs form. Within 2 days the fish hatch and start to look for food. Then after 3-4 months these fish are sexually mature and can generate new offspring. One female zebrafish can lay up to 200 eggs a week!

Zebrafish have 25 chromosones and their genome consists of about 1.5 x 10 billion basepairs. Mammal genome sizes are about 3 x 10 billion basepairs. It's unknown how many genes are in a zebrafish, but it is probably very close to how many mammalian genomes there are.
