Lady bugs are also called lady birds and lady beetles. There colors are yellow, orange, and scarlet with black spot. They eat moth eggs, small insects, and pollen. They live to one or two years. When lady bugs are in the larva they are usually there for about a month or 20 to 30 days. The female lays about 20 to over 1,000 eggs.
Ladybug Stages
The larva that hatches from the egg is small and long and has six feets. While it is growing the larva molts several times. When it reaches it full size the larvae attaches it self to a plant leaf or stem. The larva skin will then split down the back, exposing the pupa. The pupa will be about the size of a adult but will be still wrapped up, protecting the ladybug while it metamorphosis into an adult stage. Last stage would take a few days.
How did ladybugs get their name?
Lady bugs got their name because during the middle ages in Europe, swarms of aphids were destroying crops. The farmers prayed for help and they got help from the ladybugs that devoured the insects and saved the crops. Farmers named these insects lady bettles.
What eats lady bugs?
The things that eat lady bugs are insects like assassin bugs, stink bugs, spiders, and toads. They usually play dead so that no insects would eat them.
