The Wolphin

A wholphin is a very rare hybrid that is born from the mating of a false killer whale and a botttelnose dolphin.Although there have been reports of wholphins in the wild, only two in the world are in captivity, both wholphins are in Sea life park in Hawaii. They are Kekaimalu and her calf Kawii Kai.

Kekaimalu was born on May 15, 1985 , to a 6-foot 400 pound female bottlenose dolphin, Punahele who shared a pool with a 14-foot 2,000 pound false killer whale, Tunui Hahai. At birth she weighed 55 pounds and was 45 inches long. She has 66 teeth (a false killer whale has 44 and a bottlenose dolphin has 88). Her size, shape and color are a cross between a bottlenose dolphin and false killer whale as well. When she was very young she proved fertile although her calf died within a few days. In 1991 she gave birth once again to a calf named Pohaikealoha but unfortunately she died at age nine.

In 2004 she had her third calf third calf, Kawii Kai with a male bottlenose dolphin. She is one fourth false killer whale and three fourths atlantic bottlenose dolphin. Her skin is an even blend of a dolphins light gray skin and a false killer whales black. The calf was very playful and only months after birth she was the size of a one year old dolphin. Both wholphins remain at Sea life park and are part of the main show.
