 The Snow Leopard's Habitats

The Snow Leopard lives in central Asia. It's range covers 2 million kilometers, which is about the size of Mexico. The contries in the range of where Snow Leopards live are Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. China contains 60% of all the Snow Leopards in the world.

Facts!

  •  Snow Leopards are usually found over 3,400 meters to 5,000 meter above sea level.
  • Snow Leopards have their own home range. They are always in a specific place. Some home ranges can be as small as 30 sq. kilometers where there are many pray. Where prey is scarce, the leopard can take up to 1,000 sq. kilometers to survive.
  • Most Snow Leopards are in the borders of countries. These borders are heavily protected which makes it hard for researchers to access them. This is good for the leopards but bad for the researchers.

The Life of a Snow Leopard

The Snow Leopard's mating season is between January and March. The Female is pregnant for 91-110 days.  About 2-3 cubs are born in a single litter, but a snow leopard in captivity gave birth to seven at one time. Cubs are helpless when they are born and don't open their eyes for seven days. The cubs are independent after 18-22 months. Snow Leopards live for about 10-13 years in the wild if they die by natural causes. Adult leopards are from 60 to 120 lbs. They have long thick fur, with gray fur and black spots. They can eat anything up to 3 times their size. Like most cats, they will eat whatever they can, from birds to livestock.

Snow Leopard's Behavior

Snow leopard's behavior in the wild is very different from most cats. Snow Leopard's are shy and elusive. Snow Leopard's wouldn't attack a human on site, which is very different to iother cats.
