The Siberian Tiger: Panthera Tigris Altaica

A.K.A. Amur, Manchurian, Altaic, Korean, North China, or Ussuri Tiger

Here you can see the majestic Siberian tiger. There are only 400-500 Siberian tigers left in the wild. They also

are an endangered animal. Luckily, they live in the far north, in Siberia, where there are few humans which

means less poachers. Siberian tigers are the world's largest cats that aren't hybrids.

They eat fish, wild boar, and deer.

Habitat

The Siberian tiger lives in the Birch forests of North Korea, Northern China, and Eastern Russia. This benefits the Siberian Tiger because Russian timber industries aren't as destructive as they could be. It's harsh up there, but it houses a very complete ecosystem. Siberian tigers live alone unless they are cubs or mothers. They also have territories. Their territories may overlap. Generally the territory of a male tiger will overlap with several female tigers' territories. A Siberian tiger's territory generally is about 26-78 sq. km (10-30 sq. mi.) but could be up to 310 sq. km (120 sq. mi). The size of a tiger's territory depends on how much food there is available. The more food there is, the smaller the territory is. Because the Siberian tiger's territories are being broken into small pockets in the land, they are seperated. As an effect of this, the gene pool of Siberian tigers in such areas is weakening. The cubs suffer birth defects and mutations so they die more often.

Diet

The Siberian tiger mainly eats wild boar and deer. It also eats fish. Other organisms it might eat/used to eat before it was driven out of most of its habitats include bears, golden jackals, jungle cats, lynx, dholes, antelopes, horses, Mongolian wild asses, argali, camels, Manchurian wapiti, moose, goral, hares, rabbits, and pikas.

Behavior

Adult Siberian tigers live and hunt by them selves. At birth, or if a tiger got cubs, the mother and her children live together. Siberian tigers rarely attack humans, unlike the Bengal tiger. They are only dangerous when they are provoked. Over the last two centuries, there have been less than 50 unprovoked attacks on humans. In the 20th century alone, there have been only six cases of man-eating. However, during that time there were hundreds of thousands of Siberian tigers (while now there are only thousands) and they stretched from Iran to Eastern Russia. If you see a Siberian tiger, don't be afraid. Chances are it won't maul you. However, if you feel threatened, just walk away. The tiger will probably ignore you.

Miscellaneous Facts

Siberian tigers are generally about 3.3 meters long and weigh around 300 kilograms. There are several hundreds of Siberian tigers in captivity. They reach sexual maturity at 3-5 years. Litters of Siberian tigers are born in groups of 3-4, but could reach be up to 6 tigers. Local peoples in Siberia have a great respect for Siberian tigers. The Tungusic people refer to them as "Old Man" or "Grandfather." The Siberian tiger can survive very heavy frosts. They also are "gentlemen." While they feircly defend their territories, they never harm a female traveling with cubs. On the black market, poachers can get $15,000 for a tiger carcass. You can get $20,000 for a tiger hide. Every part of a poached Siberian tiger is sold. One pound of tiger meat is worth $380, one pound of tiger bone is worth $180, and a tooth is sold for $120. The penalties for possessing a tiger carcass are $5,000, which is sad considering that the poacher can make at least triple that amount by selling it.
