Red Ear Slider turtles are in the family of the Emydidae. It is native to the southern part of the United States but do to pet trade they are now all over the world. They are popular in thUS,Netherland,Canada,Japan, and, theUnited Kingdom. The Red Ear Slider turtle like warm climates from 78 degrees to 80 degrees. These turtle like to sun bask when in this process they don’t like to be bothered and they also would climb up on each other to bask. The female Red Ear Slider grows up to 10-12 inches and the male grows up to 8-10 inches. These turtles are fast in water or on land. The Red Ear Slider turtles are very shy reptiles when they are approached they would slide off the rock or log they are on. They don’t have saliva but when they eat they will have to eat in the water. Red Ear Sliders are Omnivore which means they eat primary animals and plants but however younger turtle tend to be Carnivore eating more meat. These turtles will go in Hibernation in mid October when the water drops between 50-60 degrees if in the 40'S they can die in the processes of hibernation. The turtles will reproduce in the year span from 3-5 years it also happens in between months of March and July when they are old enough. The male will first swim over to the female the male will flutter or vibrates the females head if the female accepts they will sink under water and start courtship but if the female doesn’t accept the female will get aggressive toward the male. After mating the female will start basking more often to keep the eggs warm. The turtles will also shed once in a while. Careful some Red Ear Slider turtles have a disease called Salmonella if you ever touch a RES wash yours hands!!!! To tell the sex of a RES, they will have to be the age of 3-5 years old the males have longer front claws than females also the males have a notch in their plastron, when the female ones are flatter. Turtles can also have shell rot it happens when the shell gets too dry also when the water is too dirty. RES are good at escaping, with my personal experience one of my turtles has escaped two times.
