♥ ♥ ♥ Welcome to Charlene's wonderful page of POMERANIANS!!! ♥ ♥ ♥
the page where i got my my picture is here... just click the word pompom. POMPOM
I know you think they're cute.... admit it already. :]
HISTORY: The Pomeranian originated from Germany and Poland. It is known as a pom, or a pom pom. It's from the breed "Spitz". It was named for the Pomerania region in Central Europe, which is now Germany any and Northern Europe. The first type of the Pomeranian was actually the German Spitz, American Eskimo dog, and the Wolfsspitz. Then later evolved and all of those breeds I just mentioned are a mix and then made into a dwarf version.
Health: The average Pomeranian’s life span is average about 12-19 years and weighs 6-7 pounds. The Pomeranian has a common problem, it is, Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrom. Some rare and serious problems are dysplasia, Patent (a congenital heart defect) and collapsing trachea. Dry eye, or tear duct disorders can happen among young female and sometimes causes them to go blind, which are common(oh my.. I should look out for my dog....). Skin diseases are common to dogs too, especially allergies, like "hot spots" on dogs. Follicular dysplasia or known as Alopecia X.
Grooming: The grooming of a Pomeranian is similar to a Pekingese. At lease twice a week or daily [damp] brushing your dog is recommended, to maintain and keep the fluffy dog out of Matts, tangles, and plush. The Pomeranian also sheds seasonally. Brushing the plush thick coats also keep them from preventing dry skin, and dandruff. Combing and trimming this dog is minimal. Some people sometimes choose to leave their dog short, and trimmed, also called a "puppy cut". But mostly, people prefer to long and normal hair care. The recommended ear and nail is regular, with only peak-seasonal bathing. It is also not recommended to bathe the dog, causing it to remove the essential oils of the dog, and can damage the skin, especially when using anti-flea treatments. This dog is actually prone to teeth issues, so brushing at least once a week is ideal, and it won't do any bad if they brushed daily. Because the Pomeranians skin is so sensitive, scroll down to see how to bathe them.
Behavior: The Pomeranian is a friendly, playful and active, but they are extremely protective of their owners (my dog is protective!! so better not break-in my house!). If you get a little too close, the might bark or sometimes even bite you. The Pomeranian is very obedient, it was ranked I the 23rd in the Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, and they are very easily housebroken and trained. Pomeranians should also very easily socialize with other animals and people. People often think that Pomeranians are a lap dog, you are wrong; they do not like being held for long periods of time. Pomeranians are extremely very loyal, and sometimes will sit at an owners feet [no pun intended], but mostly prefers not to be overhandled. Pomeranians should not be permission to run free, they need to be in a leash, or inside some yards.
How to bathe a Pomeranian:
Step 1.) Wait at least a couple of months before bathing your dog. Pomeranians have a minimal amount of oil on their coat and skin. You should never wash a Pomeranian more than once a month, but waiting 2 to 3 months is better. At the minimum, bath your dog every 6 months.
Step 2.) Run the dog brush through your Pomeranian's fur. Before you submerge her into water, you must get all the knots and tangles out of her fur. Don't forget behind the ears, under the tail, and on the legs. These places are known for knots
Step 3.) Fill a tub full enough so that only her legs will be submerged to her knees. Not only are Pomeranians not used to taking baths, they are also high strung animals. Never fill a bathtub higher than their knees or they will be scared and agitated.
Step 4.) Dip her feet into the water and let her investigate. Your Pomeranian may stay as still as a stone, or she may begin walking around the water, lifting her feet high as she can. This investigation period is important for their mental wellbeing.
Step 5.) Wet his fur and lather him up with dog shampoo. Massage your Pomeranian with the shampoo. You want your dog to enjoy this experience. Wash everywhere there is fur, accept for the face. You don't want to risk getting shampoo into his eyes. After he is lathered up, rinse the shampoo off and take him out of the water.
Step 6.) Dry her off with the towel and comb her fur once again. Your Pomeranian may shiver and shake after a bath, so it is wise to wrap her up in a towel for a few minutes before combing her fur. They are small dogs, so the least bit of chill makes them shiver and shake.
