Orangutans aren't monkeys. They're apes,like Gorrilas,Orangutans have no tails. Orangutans make their home in South East Asia on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra these apes live in trees and swing from tree to tree with the use of their long arms. The word Orangutan means"man of the forest". The Orangutan's population is decreasing and is in grave danger of extinction. The physical features of Orangutans include large,bulky bodies, long strong arms, short bowed legs. Orangutans are about two thirds of Gorrilas. Orangutans have long and reddish brown hair. An Orangutan's head has a large prominent mouth area and which males have cheek flaps and gets longer as the ape gets older. Orangutans hands are like ours because like us they have opposable thumbs and their arm span is about 7.5 feet .

Orangutans are very intelligent. They have been known to use found objects as tools.

BEHAVIOR AND SOCIAL HABITS

They live alone in large territories. This is probably due to their eating habits. If many Orangutans live together they might starve because of scarce food. When orangutans go to sleep they construct a nest. These nests are made of twigs and leaves and is shared by a mother orangutan nursing her offspring.

MOVEMENT

Orangutans usually move by swinging tree to tree. They sometimes walk but they rarely do that.

REPRODUCTION

Orangutans usually mate when they are about 7-10 years old. Between those years the reproductive systems of the orangutan develop
