INTRO

There are over 200 species of monkeys in the world. Here, you will

learn about several types of monkeys: Spider monkeys, Howler Monkeys,

Rhesus Monkeys, and Geledas. As you can see from the

"fast facts", all monkeys are mammals and all of them are omnivores.

Some monkeys are the main target for hunters so many species are

threatened. There are also three kinds of monkeys: Old World Monkeys

that are said to be related to us humans, New World Monkeys, and apes.

Photo: Young black spider monkey Spider Monkeys are the new world's monkeys. They are usually found in rainforests and can be found throughout Central and South America and Northern Mexico. They have very long arms and gripping tails to help them move smoothly from branch to branch and tree to tree. They spend most of their time aloft and can hold on to a branch easily even though they dont have thumbs. Spider Monkeys are social and they gather in groups of 2 or 3 dozen animals. At night, they split up into smaller parties with around half a dozen animals. The foods they eat are easy to find for them because they spend most of their time in trees. Most of the time, they feed on nuts, fruits, leaves, bird eggs, and spiders. When they communicate, they use screeches or barks so they could be pretty noisy. Females only give birth to 1 baby in 2-5 years. Young monkeys depend on their mothers for about 10 weeks and they move on but the mothers usually care for their children for their first year by carrying them on their backs.

Photo: Male black howler monkey in a tree Howler Monkeys are also new world monkeys. They are usually found in Central and South America in tropical places. They are named after their cries which can be heard up to 3 miles away. When they howl, they are sending a message to other monkeys..." this territory is already occupied by a troop." Howler monkeys are the biggest of all the new world monkeys. They heve wide side opening nostrils and no pads on their rumps. They also have a prehensile tail that acts like an extra arm to help hold and hang from branches. This tail is also useful because, like Spider monkeys, they also spend most of their time aloft. Their diet is mainly leaves. Something that can help you identify a Howler monkey is by seeing if they have a beard and long, thick, black, brown, or red hair. The red haired ones are the most common but they are the main target for most hunters.

Photo: Rhesus monkeys grooming Rhesus Monkeys are Asian, old world monkeys. they have red faces and rears, close cropped hair on their heads, and expressive faces. they are most likely to be found in these places: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Southeast Asia, Florida, and China. These intelligent animals can adapt to many habitats... some even adapted to living in human communities (mostly in India). They mostly dine on roots, fruit, seeds and bark. Sometimes, they eat insects and small animals, but usually roots, seeds, fruits, and bark. They live in troops with up to 200 animals. Rhesus Monkeys are good climbers and swimmers but they prefer to spend most of their time on they ground. Males are the dominant gender but they don't stay with their troop for a long time so the females lead the troops. The average female produces about one offspring every year. They are also related to Prehistoric humans. To learn more about their relationship with prehistoric humans, click here or here. (They're different links!)

Photo: Gelada monkeys at rest Gelada Monkeys only live on high mountain meadows of Ethiopia. At night, they drop over precipice edges to sleep together on ledges. They are baboon sized. Males are larger and more colorful. also, their rears are fat luke us humans'. Geleda Monkeys are the world's most terrestrial primates (except for humans). They are also the last existing species of the ancient grazing primates. These adorable monkeys only eat grass and spend most of their day sitting on the ground plucking grass. They live in small family units (1 male and 3-6 females). When the male gets old and declines, the females decide when to replace him. Families often combine to make large foraging bands of 30-350 animals.
