Hawks are a type of bird of prey. They are found worldwide. The most common hawk in North America is the red-tailed-hawk. Here is a page on hawks.
They are almost always seen on top off utility poles watching for dinner. Red tailed hawks are big birds and have long, wide wings. Their tail is also wide andred. Hence, the name "red-tailed-hawk." Most red-tailed-hawks have a pale chest and a dark stripe across its belly. The red tailed hawk is also called the "chickenhawk." yet it rarely eats chickens. For proof, click here. Its name is "Buteo Jamaicensis." It belongs to the kingdom Animalia, the phylum Chordata, the class Aves,the order Accipitriformes, and the family Accipitridae. It breeds from Alaska to Canada and as far as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the biggest species in its genus. It is not endangered as it is very common. Males weigh from 1.5 to 3.5 pounds. Females weigh from 2 to 4.4 pounds. they occupy deserts, grasslands, forests, rainforests, farms, and urban areas. They are easily trained as hunters and are for first year falconers. Their feathers are prized by Native American tribes. The population in the west of North America has three variations: light, dark, and intermediate or rufus. The kid birds look like a normal red-tailed-hawk, but they have yellowish irises. They will darken as the grow up. The red tailed hawk is a member of the genus Buteo. They are called buzzards in Europe. There are at least 14 subspecies of the red tailed hawk. Here are some of them: Buteo Jamaicensis, Buteo Jamaicensis alascensis, Buteo Jamaicecsis borealis, Buteo Jamaicensis Calurus, and Buteo Jamaicensis fumosus. Red tailed hawks breed from the Northwest to Central America. It lives in deserts, grasslands, forests, farms, and towns. It lives in all of North America, except in thick forests and the Arctic.
