Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dogs in America.  These dogs are useful hunting dogs.  They are also ideal guide, assistance and rescue dogs.  The color of fur can range rom a light to dark gold.

History

The golden retriever originated in the late 1800's in the Scottish Highlands, and was mostly used for hunting.  During the nineteenth century, when there was a desire for a perfect hunting dog, Lord Tweedmouth developed a retriever that was suited for the Scottish climate.  He crossed a yellow retriever with a tweed water spaniel (now extinct) on his property.  In 1865, Tweedmouth bought a yellow retriever "Nous" from an unregistered litter of black wavy- coated retrievers.  Nous was later bred with "Belle", a Tweed Water Spaniel.

The golden retriever was historically developed as a gundog to retrieve shot waterfowl and upland game. They are bred to have a soft mouth, retrieve game undamaged, and an instinctive love of water.  These dogs are used for illegal drug detection, search and rescue, and guide dogs.

Temperament

Golden retrievers are lovable, intellegent, and well mannered dogs that are eager to please.  They are easy to train and they're gentle and patient around children.  These dogs have very little guarding instincts.  They are unlikely to attack, but they make good watchdogs.  Golden retrievers need to be around people with good leadership in order to be happy.  If the dog lacks daily exercize, they will become mischevious or high strung.

Lifespan and Size

Golden retrievers usually live to be 10 to 12 years old.  The height of males is 22 to 24 inches. Females are 20 to22 inches.  Males weigh 60 to 80 pounds. females weigh 55 to 70 pounds.

Health Problems

They usually get hip dysplasia and congenital eye defects.  Parents should be checked for Von Willebrand's disease.  Skin allergies are usual with this dog and if they get skin allergies, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Exercise

Golden retrievers need to be taken on a long walk or jog daily.  They like to fetch balls and other objects.  Make sure not to overfeed your dog because they tend to put on a lot of weight.
