Carbon Dioxide jis a chemical compound that is made up of two oxygen atoms that have bonded to a single carbon atom. The chemical formula for carbon dioxide is CO2. Carbon dioxide can help, and it can hurt. An example of help is that humans can breath out carbon dioxide, which can be absorbed by plants. An example of hurt is that the CO2 released by cows and cars can weaken the ozone layer in the atmosphere, causing global warming.
Joseph Black, a Scottish chemist and physician, first identified carbon dioxide in the 1750s. At room temperatures (20-25 oC), carbon dioxide is an odourless, colourless gas, which is faintly acidic and non-
flammable.
