CALICO KITTENS

     Well, i'll start with the most commonly asked question about calico cats. What are they and why are they called ''calico'' cats? Well, no it's actually  not a breed, it is the name for a specific color pattern that qualifys a cat to be a ''calico'' cat. That color combonation is black, white and orange.They are sometimes alsoo called tortoiseshell, tortie for short, which means cat with little or no white spots.

     Since we now know that a calico cat has three colors, are they always female? The answer? Genetics. Females have two X chromosomes, (XX) and males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, (XY). Because females have two x chromosomes, they can show three colors, in this case orange black and white which then creates the color code we call ''calico''. Because males have one X chromosome, they can be orange OR black. It goes beyond just having the correct color genes, it has to do also with dominant and non dominant genes.So is there such thing as a calico cat? Yes but it is a rare occasion and in those cases they have two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (XXY) and those males, with those chromosomes are steril. (unable to breed)

      Calico cats eat the standard cat food and love tuna just as much as any other cat does! They are very playful, adventurous and not not shy at all and they make great pets! (Take it from me, I would know!)
